Turn the Crank

Until September 5, 2016, the Burnaby Village Museum is featuring displays and activities that explore century-old forms of technology, from adding machines to telegraphs and telephones.

This Northern Electric Model 317 telephone is on display in the Stride Studios exhibit gallery at Burnaby Village Museum until September 5, 2016.  Visitors have the opportunity to turn the crank and see how it works.

The first telephone was invented in 1876. The earliest telephone “networks” were two phones connected to each other by a wire. Telephones became a commercial success when telephone exchanges were developed, allowing multiple subscribers on a network to connect with any other subscriber on the network through a switchboard operator.
